So... how do you get married in Australia?
Great question! If you’re wondering what actually needs to happen (besides falling in love), here’s a super simple breakdown of the legal process.
Good news: it’s easier than you think.
1. The Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) This is the first big step. We need to complete a form called the Notice of Intended Marriage and lodge it with your celebrant (hey, that could be me!) at least one month before your wedding date. It’s valid for up to 18 months, so plenty of time to plan your dream day.
Great thing is, I will complete the NOIM for you— all I need is:• Valid ID (passport or birth certificate + driver’s license)• If you’ve been married before, evidence of how that ended (divorce or death certificate)
We’ll sign it together at my home in Canterbury, Melbourne (or virtually if needed), and then it’s full steam ahead!
2. Planning the Ceremony
We’ll chat about what kind of ceremony you want—romantic, relaxed, funny, heartfelt… whatever suits you two best. I’ll custom write your ceremony from scratch, so it truly reflects you—your story, your vibe, your kind of love. I’ll also guide you through vows, readings, music, and all the special touches. You don’t need to have it all figured out—I’ve got you.
3. Saying “I Do”
On the big day, there are a few words you must say to make it legal (I’ll prompt you, don’t worry), and you’ll sign three documents with your witnesses. It’s official—you’re married!
4. The Paperwork
After your ceremony, I’ll submit everything to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in your state. If you want a legal marriage certificate (the one you need for name changes, visas, etc.), I can point you in the right direction on how to order it. ⸻ That’s It!
No stress. No confusing legal speak. Just love, paperwork, and someone (me!) to make it feel smooth, relaxed, and totally you.
